Small Group Personal Training Albuquerque

When you're looking for a personal trainer, most options are either expensive one-on-one sessions or giant group classes where nobody watches your form. We believe our format is the best of both worlds: personalized attention in a VERY small class.

What Is "Small Group" Personal Training?

Small group personal training at Square One Fitness puts three to four clients in a session together under one of our certified trainers. Each person gets individual coaching: our coaches correct your form, adjust your load, and track your progress. Our training is built to adjust to each person's body, history, and ability.

Our programming draws from Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS), a movement system referenced in Dr. Peter Attia's book 'Outlive' which is focused on stability and functional movement before adding load.

What to Expect in our Small Group Training Sessions

We'll start with movement quality, and from there we'll move into DNS-based stability work, then into strength or kettlebell training scaled to each individual. We close with mobility or soft tissue work as the session calls for it.

Each person in the same session may be working different weights, ranges of motion or movement variations. We only increase your load when your form is consistent and locked in. With one trainer per 3–4 clients, it allows us to give you more personalized attention.

You'll enjoy the space, too:  a calm, quiet, sensory-friendly atmosphere that helps you focus on each exercise and every rep. It actually feels closer to a movement clinic than a commercial gym.

Who Small Group Personal Training Is For

We see a wide range of people, but a few that show up more often tend to be those who don't know where to start. You don't need to be familiar with a gym or any exercises before you start working with us - we'll begin at YOUR level based on your strength and agility.

Adults 40–65 who've been burned before, got hurt at a bootcamp, or tried a big-box gym and felt invisible. Maybe you took a few years off of exercise and it's time to get back - we built our programs to help you.

Women in perimenopause and menopause. Training here is built around bone density, hormonal awareness, and functional strength. Our founder Dr. Emily Blair is a chiropractor, and we pay particular attention to how the body actually works at this stage.

People rebuilding after injury or surgery. DNS starts with stability, and every session adjusts around what your body can do that day.

Neurodivergent adults and people with sensory sensitivity. We provide a peaceful, open and inviting space with no sensory overwhelm. Clients have even told us the studio environment was the deciding factor in their decision to join us!

Small Group vs. 1-on-1 Personal Training

The main difference is attention and cost. In a 1-on-1 session, the trainer focuses only on you for the full hour. In a small group session like ours, the trainer rotates actively. You'll get personalized guidance on using correct form and load adjustments throughout your session.

There are cases where one-on-one is the better fit: very complex post-surgical rehab, complete privacy requirements, or medical histories that need constant one-person supervision. For most people returning to exercise, managing menopause, or starting from scratch, small group delivers everything they need.

Why People Quit the Gym, and Why This Format Works Differently

More than 90% of people who join a gym quit within three months. Most gyms don't notice or even care when you stop coming, nobody's there to help adjust your program when life gets hard and progress is difficult to see when you're on your own in an environment that you don't "vibe" with.

In our small group training programs, the workout is built for you: your form and load are tracked consistently, so progress is visible early enough to keep you coming.

The environment matters too! A space that doesn't feel hostile is one you'll actually return to. One of our Albuquerque clients put it plainly: training day became their favorite day of the week. That's what consistent, coached, low-intimidation training produces when you find the right place to train!

Frequently Asked Questions

How is small group training different from just going to a regular gym class?

Most gym classes pack 15 to 30 people into a room and move at one pace. At Square One Fitness, sessions are limited to 3-4 people, so Dr. Blair and her trainers can watch your form on every rep, adjust what isn't working, and keep you from picking up the habits that lead to injury. It feels a lot more like having your own trainer.

I haven't worked out in years and I'm kind of embarrassed about how out of shape I am. Will I be the only beginner in the room?

That's actually the most common situation we see. Most people walking into Square One Fitness from neighborhoods like the Northeast Heights, North Valley, and the Corrales area haven't trained consistently in years, and many are coming back after an injury. Everybody in the group starts at their own level. There's no baseline you have to meet before you're allowed to show up - just show up!

Is small group training actually worth the money, or am I better off just getting a cheap gym membership?

A basic gym membership costs almost nothing but gives you no instruction, no accountability, and no one watching your form. The injury rate in unsupervised fitness settings is significant: one study from the National Center for Biotechnology Information website found that roughly 50% of people who exercise regularly experience a fitness-related injury each year. Small group training at Square One sits well below the cost of 1-on-1 personal training while giving you the coaching that actually prevents setbacks.

I've had knee and back problems for a long time. Is this something I can even do?

Yes, and honestly this format was designed with people like you in mind. Dr. Blair holds certifications in DNS, FMS, and Active Release Technique, and she builds every session around your specific limitations. Clients from Rio Rancho to the Sandia foothills come in managing chronic knee, hip, and back issues and leave stronger than they arrived. Every movement can be modified so you're never asked to do something your body isn't ready for.

How long before I actually start feeling a difference?

Most people notice improved energy and reduced discomfort within the first three to four weeks. Visible strength gains typically follow around weeks six to eight with consistent attendance. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, meaningful neuromuscular adaptations begin within two to four weeks of structured resistance training. Clients across Albuquerque who commit to two to three sessions per week consistently report that everyday tasks, like carrying groceries, climbing stairs, hiking the Bosque, start feeling noticeably easier within the first month.

How much does small group training cost?

We're way less expensive (and more fun) than personal training. But we aren't a $15 class that you take with 30 other people. Our base rate per training session is $55 for Smart Strength and Kettlebell, max class size of 4 students, and $65 for Foundations of Fitness, max class size of 3 students. However, punchcards and monthly plans can bring those prices as low as $35 per session. That's a ridiculous value for all of the personalized attention in these intelligent movement sessions. There are no enrollment fees or contracts. Try a class for yourself at half-price - just book online and let's get moving!
